Becomes First LEED Silver EB Building in Rio de Janeiro
(RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL) – The Brazil office of Hines, the international real estate firm, announced today that the Coca-Cola Brazil building has received Silver certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Existing Buildings (EB) rating system. Built in 1972, Coca-Cola Brazil has become the first LEED-EB certified property in Rio de Janeiro, and is among the first EB certified projects in Brazil.
The 19-story, 90,415-square-foot office building is located in Rio de Janeiro's prestigious Beaches submarket, directly across Botafogo Bay and the city's landmark Sugar Loaf Mountain.
Hines Brazil has provided property management services for Coca-Cola's Brazilian administrative headquarters since 2003.
Green features and programs for the building include: implementing a comprehensive recycling program; using environmentally sensitive cleaning products and practices; reducing indoor potable water use through low-flow fixtures; and executing several energy conservation measures for the building’s mechanical and electrical systems.
Additionally, Hines offers its proprietary GREEN OFFICE for Tenants program, which assists in giving tenants options to reduce their carbon footprint.
Hines Senior Property Manager Sandra Costa stated, “Hines’ management team is thrilled to be the first to successfully obtain LEED EB Silver certification in Rio.
Our client, Coca-Cola, also values the environment and supports efforts to lead the industry in sustaining our future.”
“Hines is committed to implementing ways to operate our properties to reduce energy consumption, limit water use and minimize waste. This achievement at Coca-Cola Brazil furthers our goal of being an industry leader in sustainability,” added Hines’ Global Sustainability Officer Gary Holtzer.
