(MADRID) – The Madrid office of Hines, the international real estate firm, announced today that Zielo Shopping Pozuelo has received Gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® for Core & Shell (CS) rating system.
The property is the first shopping center in Europe to attain this designation.
It was originally pre-certified to the Silver level.
Hines Spain Managing Director Jamie Rea said, “We are very pleased with this achievement, as it sets a new sustainability benchmark for retail in Europe. The certification will be seen as a positive by shoppers, tenants and future investors.”
He continued, “Zielo has been attracting new tenants and customers with an innovative marketing plan that incorporates activities linking community members to the center.”
Designed by Alberto Martín Caballero, the three-level, 172,000-square-foot retail center, which opened in October 2009, houses more than 60 shops and restaurants.
The property features a large central atrium, which is flooded with natural light, and rooftop terraces with impressive views of the Casa de Campo and the Madrid skyline.
The roster of prestigious national and international tenants includes: Adela Gil; Bimba & Lola; Blanco; Colección Hogar; Flamenco; H&M; Hackett; Hazel; Le Creuset; Lester; Mango; Musgo; Pórtico; Purificación García; Roberto Verino; Supermercados Sánchez Romero; Trucco; and Yusty.
Hines entered the Spanish market in 1995 with Diagonal Mar, a strategic investment in Barcelona on 84 acres fronting the Mediterranean.
The project is one of Europe’s largest mixed-use developments totaling over four million square feet consisting of a retail center, five residential phases, three hotels, three office buildings and the third-largest public park in Barcelona.
In 2000, Hines expanded its operations into Madrid, and in 2004, a Marbella office was opened.
Today, Hines Spain has over 25 employees involved in development, leasing, financing and asset management.
